A place to be young
On the grassland, childhood appears in small gestures: children sitting close together, a younger child held securely, a face turning toward the camera. The open landscape gives these portraits their setting, but the closeness between the children gives them their warmth. This edition begins with that simple balance: a wide world, and the comfort of someone nearby.
Time for ordinary moments
One frame catches a quiet expression; another catches a broad smile. There is no single mood that defines a childhood. These photographs leave room for shyness, playfulness and the pauses between them. Looking slowly allows each child to remain an individual, rather than becoming an illustration of a story already decided for them.
Attention before assumptions
A photograph can show a gesture or a shared place. It cannot tell us everything about a family’s circumstances, a child’s wishes or the support a community needs. We share these images with that limit in mind. Respectful attention begins by noticing what is present and leaving room for what we do not know.
The care we hope to carry forward
For Potala Karma, this journal sits alongside a practical commitment: US$1 from every item sold will go toward charitable initiatives supporting children in impoverished mountain communities in Tibet. The photographs are an invitation to care; documented giving updates will provide the account of how that commitment is carried out. Childhood deserves both warmth in the way it is seen and care in the actions taken around it.
