The Making of Dzi Beads

Before Dzi beads became jewelry, they were carried close to the body—across mountain passes, long journeys, and changing seasons.

In Tibetan tradition, the eye upon a Dzi symbolizes watchfulness. Circles suggest continuity, while lines resemble paths, boundaries, and the turning of fortune. Together, these patterns form a story without words.

Old legends offer different accounts of the first Dzi. Some describe them as treasures found within the earth; others speak of beads descending from the heavens. These are legends rather than recorded history, but they reveal how deeply Dzi have been respected—as companions for the journey and symbols preserved through generations.

Different patterns are traditionally associated with protection, clarity, courage, abundance, and good fortune. Their meaning, however, is personal. No single interpretation belongs to every bead.

When I look at a Dzi, I first notice its balance: how the eyes follow the curve, where the lines meet, and whether the pattern carries a quiet sense of order.

To carry a Dzi today is to continue an ancient human gesture—choosing a symbol for the road ahead.
