The Making of Gau Boxes

For generations, a Gau allowed a traveler to carry a small sacred space close to the heart.

Traditional Gau were portable shrine boxes, often made from worked metal or carved wood. Some held miniature images, written prayers, cords, or other objects of personal devotion. Their outer surfaces were decorated with windows, lotus forms, auspicious signs, and protective imagery.

Old stories speak of merchants and pilgrims crossing distant mountain roads with a Gau worn against the chest. Far from home, the small box became a reminder that home was not only a place—it could also be memory, faith, and intention.

The closed box suggests protection and privacy. The opening at its centre suggests a meeting between the visible world and what is carried within.

When I examine a Gau, I look at the relationship between its outer form and its inner space. A carefully made container teaches us that what we choose to preserve matters.
