The Making of Tibetan Rugs

On the Tibetan plateau, a rug was never only an ornament. It brought warmth to the floor, softened a seat, travelled with a saddle, and gave color to the interior of a home.

Its patterns could turn everyday space into a world of symbols. Clouds suggested the movement of the sky. Flowers spoke of renewal. Geometric borders created order and protection around the central field. Tiger imagery, found in certain Tibetan rugs, became associated with courage, authority, and the fearless presence of the animal.

Some rugs were made for ordinary domestic life; others belonged to ceremonial or contemplative settings. Their meanings changed with their imagery and use.

A rug carries memory differently from a jewel. It remembers footsteps, seasons, gatherings, and the quiet repetition of daily life.

When I look at a woven pattern, I follow its rhythm as I would follow a path. Repetition gives it strength, while small variations reveal the human hand.
